Shimada

Located in the watershed of the Ooi River, Shimada is a peaceful city brimming with natural wonders, historical sites, good food, and friendly people. Take an exciting ride on a huffing and puffing steam locomotive through refreshing green mountains and tea fields, and enjoy a variety of sightseeing options near the railway line, such as watching cherry blossoms or a refreshing trip to a hot spring.

A food theme park offering hands-on experiences that allow visitors to experience the wonders of green tea, agriculture and sightseeing available in the Ooigawa watershed. Pick up the 100 Best Things To Do In Ooigawa at the Ooi-Navi Tourist Information Center and Gift Shop. This creative deck of 100 cards showcases a vast range of activities that cater to each guest’s preferences and highlight the wonderful things to do in the Ooigawa area.

This 897.4m bridge is a power spot that supposedly wards off evil and promotes longevity. The Horai Bridge 897.4 Tea House at its foot has a rest area and gift shop full of local specialty souvenirs. Drinks and green tea are available for takeout, and their soft-serve ice cream is also a favorite.

Boasting some of the most prolific volumes of natural hot spring water in Shizuoka, this spa offers a total of 11 men’s and women’s baths with hot spring water flowing directly from the source. There is a 20m pool, 4 different types of baths, a variety of saunas, and also a community pool area that family and friends can enjoy together (bathing suits required in this area).

Makinohara

Behind the Makinohara tea fields lie 15km of coastline. Marine-sport enthusiasts can enjoy surfing and paddleboarding year-round. Fans of history can enjoy learning about Tokugawa Ieyasu’s chamberlain Tanuma Okitsugu and the former Katusmata area on historical walks as well as at hot springs with a long history.

Pick seasonal teas, rent traditional tea-pickers’ costumes, and visit a tea factory. A variety of teas and tea-based sweets such as chocolate, yokan (a traditional jellied Japanese dessert) are available for purchase.

Tanuma Okitsugu was lord of the Enshu-Sagara estate towards the end of the Edo shogunate, and the area is steeped in the family’s history, showcasing a variety of historical sites and cultural artifacts. A bronze statue of him is due to be completed in May of this year.

Fujieda

Located in the heart of Shizuoka, Fujieda is a city rich in flowers, greenery, and fresh water. It was the location of two official travelers’ stations along the Tokaido road in the Edo era. Fun to visit, fun to watch, fun to know, we know you’ll take delight in Fujieda.

The Asahina district is one of the three major producers of shade-grown gyokuro tea, along with Uji in Kyoto and Yame in Fukuoka. At the Hyogetsu-tei Tea House, you can enjoy gyokuro tea and matcha in a relaxed atmosphere. They also serve dishes flavored with gyokuro tea and offer local souvenirs for sale.

This was the location of the 21st travelers’ station along the Tokaido road. Visitors can see how people lived in the Edo era (1603-1867), making this a valuable educational resource. It was registered as a national historical site in 1998 and as a Japanese Heritage Site in 2020

Yoshida Town

Facing the Suruga Bay with the Ooi River flowing in the east, this area was the location of the famous battle between Takeda Shingen and Tokugawa Ieyasu in the Warring States period (1467-1615). Currently, it is an industrial town which also produces a variety of freshwater eel, lettuce, baby sardines, and melon products.

This observation deck is in Nomanjiyama Park, located on the ruins of the old mountain castle, which is itself the site of many battles between Takeda Shingen and Tokugawa Ieyasu. The castle houses a variety of artifacts such as swords, and the observation deck offers a panoramic view stretching from Mt. Fuji to Suruga Bay and the Southern Alps.

A 14.3-hectare park facing the Ooi River and Suruga Bay. In addition to wide-open lawns, there is a pond biosphere and also gardens filled with seasonal blossoms. Local delicacies are available in the park’s café.

Kawanehoncho Town

Kawanehoncho is blessed with a one in a million combination of lakes, autumn leaves, scenic nature, and the Ooigawa Steam Locomotive. It’s also famous for its suspension bridge. There are campsites near the Ooi River, where visitors can enjoy canoeing, fishing, and playing in the water. There are also many hot springs with exceptional quality of water, such as the Sumatakyo Hot Spring, famous for its Beauty Bath, whose waters will make your skin silky smooth.

Winner of the Cool Japan Award 2019, this station appears to be suspended above the lake. One of the best spots in the area, it’s surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty and can be enjoyed in any season.

The Yume Suspension Bridge was chosen as one of the globally popular travel website Trip Advisor’s “10 Pedestrian Bridges You Must Cross Before You Die”. This bridge passes over the mysterious emerald green waters of the lake. Legend says if you pause in the middle and wish for love to find you, your wish will come true.

Omaezaki

Located on Shizuoka’s southernmost cape, Omaezaki is rich in natural beauty and is a producer of bonito, Enshu Yumesaki beef, melon and other delicious regional specialities.
Located between the Enshu-Nada sea and Suruga Bay, you can see Mt. Fuji and over the ocean all the way to the horizon from almost anywhere in the city.

This chalk-colored lighthouse is an Omaezaki landmark. One of 16 lighthouses in Japan that visitors can climb, it boasts panoramic views of the sea. It’s especially beautiful when lit up at night.

Located on the east side of Omaezaki Port, this park faces the ocean and is lined with palm trees, which make for extremely photogenic scenery when combined with the deep blue of the ocean and the sky. There is an RV campsite and is a great spot for sea bathing!

These sand dunes, the largest on the Pacific Coast, are shaped by the karakkaze, the dry strong winds common in the Enshu area. A great beach to enjoy in the summer, the seasonal winds also create beautiful patterns in the sand in winter. There are also 230 Kawazu cherry trees which bloom from mid-February to mid-March.

Kikugawa

Kikugawa is lushly green, easy to access and has a variety of attractions to enjoy no matter what the season. Go camping and enjoy leisure sports in the heart of nature, or delight in savory delights and cultural heritage. Come and relax here!

Hitsurugi Campground is located at the foot of Mt. Hitsurugi. It offers 5 bungalows and ten RV campsites (available year-round) and is an excellent place to enjoy the beauty of nature while camping and barbecuing.

Kakegawa

Bordered on the north by Mt. Hakko, Mt. Obi, and Mt. Awagatake in the north and by the Enshu-Nada sea in the south, this city is blessed with an abundance of nature and a mild climate, making it ideal for outdoor activities year-round. It is also endowed with a grand total of three castles, which is extremely unusual in Japan.

This structure is of great historical value and has been certified as one of Japan’s 100 Great Castles. The castle town and travelers’ station that are still a part of the city today make history come alive.

Sitting at an altitude of 532m on the summit of Mt. Awagatake, the Awagatake GIAHS Chagusaba Terrace (nicknamed Kapposhi Terrace) reopened in May 2019. The terrace overlooks Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay, and rests above vast tea fields cultivated using a traditional system in which grass is used as mulch for the tea plantations.

The Sanja Sairei musicians take part in the festival parade and celebrations, which have roots in the Edo Tenka Festival
